Caramel Apples – The Easy Way

I love caramel apples, but I do not like the mess they make all over my face, let alone all the work it takes to unwrap all those caramels and melt them.

To remedy this situation of wanting something, but not really wanting it the traditional way I decided to give making a caramel dipping sauce a shot. This way rather than making a mess all over my face when biting into the apple covered in caramel, I could just slice an apple and dip to my heart’s content. Plus, no unwrapping store-bought caramels.

Homemade Caramel Dipping Sauce

1 Cup Salted Butter (2 sticks)

2 Cups Brown Sugar

1 1/3 Cups Heavy Cream

2 tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract

1/4 tsp. Salt

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat.

Mix in brown sugar.

Stir for 4 minutes.

Mix in heavy cream

and stir for 2-3 more minutes.

Remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla and salt.

Pour hot caramel sauce into jars and allow to cool. Store in refrigerator.

This sauce is so buttery and sweet that I will never buy store-bought caramel dipping sauce again or make caramel apples with melted store-bought caramels. There are many other ways to use this sauce also. I’ve already used it on ice cream, pancakes, and apple pie. Next I think I’ll try some on cheesecake, possibly some bread pudding, and waffles most definitely.

Perhaps I could be called lazy because I just don’t want to unwrap tons and tons of caramels in order to enjoy the sweet, gooey treat of a caramel apple, but this time my “laziness” worked to my advantage. Having a new recipe to add to my recipe collection and another homemade sauce to replace something store-bought, processed and full of ingredients I don’t want to give my family is well worth the ten minutes it takes to make this, and for this I am — Simply Grateful.

  2. Well, how ingenious are you! Not only what you made and made it for but also everything else you’ve used it for – perfect flavor for autumn. And, of course, all of those items that you’ve used it on could all come with a side of homemade apple sauce … and you’ve come full circle!
    And how cute is the jar! When you’re done with the jar will you just toss the lid or save for the next batch or undo the twine?

    • I suppose the apples aren’t appropriate for all the uses of this sauce, but I thought it was good enough for now. Besides, no matter what you use the sauce for, apples I think will be a staple.
